Pointing Poker is a consensus-based estimation technique used in agile development to estimate the effort required for user stories or tasks. Team members make independent estimates using a deck of cards with Fibonacci numbers.

Fibonacci Sequence

The Fibonacci sequence (0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89) is used because it reflects the uncertainty in larger estimates.

Estimation Guidelines:

  • • 0-1: Trivial tasks
  • • 2-3: Simple tasks
  • • 5-8: Moderate complexity
  • • 13-21: Complex tasks
  • • 34+: Very complex (consider breaking down)
  • • ?: Need more information

How to Use This Tool

  1. 1. Present the user story or task to your team
  2. 2. Each team member selects their estimate independently
  3. 3. Reveal all estimates at the same time
  4. 4. If estimates differ significantly, discuss the differences
  5. 5. Repeat until the team reaches consensus
  6. 6. Record the final estimate and move to the next story
